Melville’s charmed preseason continues

Melville sauntered to a 9-1 win over Cambridge in their latest pre-season friendly at Gower Park.

It was the final match before pitch renovations begin on Gower No 1 and was a chance for Aaron Scott to run the cutter on the coaching bench in the absence of gaffer Ian McGrath.

There were a couple of goals apiece to Canadian Hansly Felix and Hawke’s Bay arrival Harry Mason. Riku Soejima and Legga Legz were also on the scoresheet, while Mark Jones – who was lively on the right flank – popped in a penalty.

Melville assistant coach Aaron Scott was so relaxed on the bench he sucked a lollipop.

It was hard to keep track by the end and the match finished slightly early in near darkness (which is what happens when you kick off at 6.35pm and have a 20-minute half time break).

While Melville are featuring a couple of players previously with Cambridge, the visitors had the services of Mike Cosgrave, formerly of this parish.

Joel McMullan was the lynchpin in defence for Melville while Logan Wiznewski, Liam Hayes and Levi Clark conducted traffic in the midfield.
