Melville win at Tauranga
Schoolboy Jake Mechell scored his first northern premier league goals and Scott Reid saved a penalty as Melville beat Tauranga City United 1-0 at Links Ave.
On a topsy-turvy day the Melville Reserves lost (2-1) for the first time, but the premier league team won for the first time in 2016.
Mechell, revelling in his first start of the season, played as a central striker, and even if he had not scored, would have been player of the day.
While there is a teeny weeny suspicion that a number of Melville’s starting XI players have fitness issues, Mechell displayed the stamina of a brewery horse and romped about like a colt in springtime. He held the ball up well, chased hard, and probably covered twice as much territory as any other Melville player.
And with another schoolboy, Lachie McIsaac, also showing that running won’t kill you, Melville were very competitive.
Mechell’s goal came 12 minutes into the second half, as he burst straight through the middle in racing onto a ball supplied from the right flank to beat the defence and the keeper.
But there were worries fro Melville when Jono Viviani scythed down a Tauranga striker in the box shorlty after, however new goalkeeper Scott Reid – who has previously been training with Tauranga – dived to his right to deny Jerahl Hughes’ spot kick.
Melville are at home to Central United on Saturday. Meanwhile M & M (Mechell and McIsaac) were off to a 2-day New Zealand Secondary Schools camp on Tuesday and Wednesday.
