Melville draw with Onehunga
Melville banked a hard-earned point, but were frustrated not to have done even better in drawing 2-2 at home with Onehunga Sports.
Melville were in the rare position of leading 2-0 at the break against the premier league’s fourth placed team, thanks to a far post header from Jake Mechell following a corner, then Marc Evans deflecting home a Ryan Taylor shot.
But Melville wilted in the second half and Onehunga increasingly bossed the game. Joe Dawkins pulled a goal back with a header, then disaster struck for Melville when left back Taylor played a backpass which went straight to Sean Lovemore who had the easiest of finishes.
Melville then survived numerous Onehunga attacks, and once Lachie McIsaac went off injured the midfield was misfiring at best.
It got worse for Melville when referee Carl Watkins gave a straight red card to Marc Evans. Evans was fouled by Dawkins, who got a yellow card. But Evans then pushed Dawkins and was dismissed.
In his speech Melville coach Steve Williams called the decision “incredibly harsh”.
Both coaches were disappointed they had not won the match.
Meanwhile Melville Reserves came from behind to snatch a draw with a second half heasder from Dominic O’Sullivan.
