Melville to enter Masters Games team
Plans are afoot to enter a Melville United team in the New Zealand Masters Games (Over 45s Men) in Whanganui next year.
Melville goalkeeping coach Neil Mouncher – who is much, much older than 45 – is facilitating the entry and is inviting expressions of interest from Melville club members initially, though participation will also be extended to a few non-club members.
The tournament runs from Friday February 8 until Sunday February 10, 2019.
Mouncher, a Melville first team player in the 1980s, will convene a selection panel which also includes younger members Stu Timings, and Kris “Pom” Allen.
Entry cost is $30 per person, with accommodation costs yet to be finalised.
Mouncher said that while he personally was eligible to play in a significantly older age bracket, Under 45s was a division where Melville could field a very competitive team.
Mouncher has indicated he will play outfield so as not to discourage less talented goalkeepers from seeking to join the squad.
He would not be drawn on whether life member Phil Wheatley would be selected, saying only that 12 players had so far expressed interest, with that number likely to increase.
