Melville notch important win
Melville have safely negotiated the first of three tricky assignments in eight days with a 1-0 home win over Hibiscus Coast at Gower Park.
It leaves Melville in a comfortable second place, two points adrift of leaders Forrest Hill Milford, but six points clear of Hibiscus Coast in third – with the rider that Fencibles and Mt Albert Ponsonby have a game in hand and could close the gap to three points.
The critical moments in the match came early. Max Tommy made two brilliant early reflex saves and then in the 15th minute Jordan Lamb earned a penalty when brought down by the goalkeeper.
Jama Boss converted the spot kick, though keeper John Fletcher got a fingertip to it.
The goal moved Boss level with Josh Davies at the top of the league Golden Boot standings.
Melville had some fine chances to extend their lead but the shooting was wayward.
Meanwhile two first half goals from defender Joel McMullan got Melville Reserves home 2-1 against Hibiscus Coast. The win has moved Melville Ressies to first equal with Fencibles on the table.
Melville are away to Waitemata, 3pm Anzac Day, and then at home to league leaders Forrest Hill Milford on Saturday.
