Melville face Anzac day battle
Melville United host high flying Eastern Suburbs in northern premier league on Anzac Day (Thursday) at Gower Park from the challenging position of being second to last on the table after four rounds of matches.
After a 1-2 away loss to North Shore on Good Friday and a 1-3 home loss to Manukau United six days earlier, Melville have just three points from their first four matches, and may find life no easier against a Suburbs team which has beaten Manukau 5-2 away, Birkenhead 3-0, Waitakere City 3-1, and drawn 1-1 away with North Shore to be unbeaten and second on the table.
Melville have created chances this year but scored just three goals in four matches. Marc Evans at least got off the mark with a goal against North Shore, though Melville were already 2-0 down by that stage. Melville finished strongly but could not find an equaliser.
Melville are also at home to Western Springs on Saturday, 3pm.
# Melville Reserves remain unbeaten in their league after a 3-3 away draw with North Shore.
Gabriel Jhang gave Melville a first minute lead before Shore struck back with two goals to former WaiBOP national league player Jerahl Hughes. Blake Wisnewski scored early in the second half for Melville though Shore again went ahead before an own goal drew Melville level.
Melville are now third on the Reserves table, two points adrift of leaders Onehunga Sports.
# In the WaiBOP Federation League a first half goal from Harry Coulson gave Melville a 1-0 win over Tauranga Blue Rovers. Melville are fifth on the table, just two points adrift of the lead.
