Melville coaching opportunity

Melville United are inviting expressions of interest for two part-time paid coaching positions for 2020 and beyond, following the decision of 2019 coaches Sam Wilkinson and Michael Mayne to take up major posts in the code elsewhere.

The club is now inviting applications for a first team coach (northern premier league) and a Melville United Academy director of coaching to continue the fine work undertaken by Wilkinson and Mayne from 2017-19.

Wilkinson has accepted a post with Wellington Phoenix as academy coach while an announcement is expected soon on Mayne’s future in a New Zealand Football role.

Melville chairman Wytse Bouma praised the commitment and success achieved by Mayne and Wilkinson during their time with Melville.

“They were very organised, and diligent in pursuing their vision of what Melville could be,” Bouma said.

“Their record in winning the NRFL Division 1 in 2018 and then making the Chatham Cup final this year was a proud one.

“And their work in establishing the Melville United Academy has left us with a fine template to build upon, and that is exactly what we are planning for 2020, with the club seeking to contest new northern league competitions at U13, U14, and U14 girls level.”

Bouma observed that a turnover of personnel was a regular feature of club life as football circumstances changed.

“But the good news is this provides an exciting opportunity for a new coach – or coaches – to come in and work with a good group of players, coaches and administrators in a great football environment at Gower Park, with a well-resourced club.

“We are seeking expressions of interest for personnel to work with both our first team and academy programmes, while we have a number of academy coaches keen to return and support the existing structure which will make the transition for newcomers so much easier.”

Meanwhile Bouma also acknowledged the heartache caused by Melville’s 3-2 cup final loss to Napier.

“While it was gutting to fall at the final hurdle, as a club were very proud of our players for a terrific effort throughout the season and look forward to everyone regrouping and giving it another crack in 2020.

“If we all stick together we will be as resilient as ever.”

# Melville’s AGM has been set for Saturday November 23 at 2pm.
