It’s derby time in the Cup

Melville have drawn a mouth-watering second round Chatham Cup tie against Claudelands Rovers.

The match will be played at Gower Park on Saturday June 1 at 2pm.

Rovers are second in the northern league second division and unbeaten this season.

Melville don’t have quite the same cross-town rivalry with Rovers that they endure with Wanderers given there’s not too much to dislike at Galloway Park.

Indeed, this season Rovers appeal more as something akin to a stroppy kid brother of Melville’s, given they feature former Melville first team players Jake Bayliss, Jono Viviani, Thomas Mouncher, Sedy Ngungambili, Bailey Webster, David Smith, Dan Finlay, and Jacob Robb.

The Rovers coaching staff of Mark Cossey and Howie Bettridge have also had long associations with Melville. Cossey is the club’s all-time greatest goal-scorer in the modern era (post-amalgamation with Waikato United in 1996) while Bettridge is a former Club Person of the Year winner.

In the cup, Rovers stopper Thomas “Likeable” Mouncher will be squaring off against his father, Neil “Angry” Mouncher, who is Melville’s goalkeeping coach, and has even been listed as a reserve goalkeeper a couple of times this season, despite his advancing age (57).

Melville certainly won’t be treating Rovers lightly, given they have yet to win at home this season.

Rovers beat Auckland University 7-0 away in the first round of the Cup. Melville had a bye.

# Melville are moving to strengthen their squad, with two new players expected to join the squad in the next two weeks.

# Melville are away to Waitakere on Saturday, May 18.
