Golf & football weekend
It’s the Melville Golf Classic this weekend, but there is also a northern league pre-season fixture against Claudelands Rovers at 10am, Saturday, Gower Park pitch 7.
There has been some cross-pollination between the clubs during the off-season, with Federico Marquez coming to Melville from Rovers, and Jacob Robb, Jono Viviani and Perry Katesmark transferring to Rovers in search of more first team game time.
In pre-season matches so far this season Melville have lost 3-1 to Central United and beaten Glenfield Rovers 3-0, bit have still to get all their first-choice players on the pitch at once. This season Rovers are coached by Mark Cossey, who some may remember from elsewhere.
Meanwhile the annual Melville United Golf Classic is being held on Sunday at the Ngahinepouri Golf Club, with a shotgun start at 12 noon (11.30 for the welcome speech).
It is a fantastic social event as well as an important fundraiser for the club and we expect entries from all Melville teams.
Entry is $50 a player of $180 for a four. The tournament is contested in an ambrose format (playing the best ball from your group) with complementary refreshments and dress-up encouraged. Entries can be taken on the day, or organise a four and register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Last year’s event saw over 60 players take part, with the Advance Joinery team – featuring a number of Melville club legends – winning the event.
