Melville’s double digit delight

Melville registered a new club record in beating Tauranga City United 10-0 in their northern league division one match.

In a game some consider a derby match, Melville United topped the best northern league effort of their foundation club Melville AFC, which hammered the now-defunct Fraser 9-0 in the northern league fourth division south in 1983.

It also equalled Melville United’s biggest-ever winning margin from a 10-0 Chatham Cup roasting of Otorohanga 10-0 in 1999.

And in a sense it defeated the Gower Park scoreboard, insofar as a design flaw simply did not anticipate double digit margins, and it required muscular life member Stu Timings to physically hold the numbers in place for the final three minutes.

Top work, Stu. Last 10.

Melville were too good in all departments, particularly in attack, with Stafford Dowling (in the featured picture) leading the way with a hat trick, his first at senior level. Eric “Jones” scored two, George Curry scored two, while Marc Evans, Lachie McIsaac and Luke Searle added second half goals.
