Cracking start for new-look Melville

Melville are where they want to be for the rest of the season – at the top of the northern league first division after a storming 11-0 home win over hapless Oratia.

The party began as early as the third minute when new Welsh signing Josh Davies turned the ball home from inside the area after good work on the right by Jama Boss. Both players went on to complete hat tricks, with Boss fluffing a penalty only to net the rebound. Lebon Bulamba and subs Ernest Pidoke and Jordan Lamb also scored.

Davies was later named man of the match, though it could easily have gone to half a dozen others.

The starting line-up to the new-look Melville team was: Max Tommy, Luke Searle, Aaron Scott, Flynn O’Brien, Sedy Baroke, Mark Jones, Liam Hayes, Liam Steffert, Lebon Bulamba, Jama Boss, Josh Davies. Subs who came on in the second half were Wade Molony, Ernest Pidoke and Jordan Lamb.

Those on northern league debut for Melville were Baroke, Jones, Davies, Molony, Pidoke and Lamb.

Oratia had a player sent off for a second bookable offence midway through the second half.

Oratia coach Steve Cain acknowldged his team had been battered, pointing to Melville’s quick movement off the ball as their undoing.

Melville co-coach Sam Wilkinson warned everyone not to get carried away, and that playing teams away from Gower Park would be a much more significant pointer to their season fortunes.

Melville are away to North Shore on Good Friday, 3pm. Their next home game is against promoted Fencibles on April 7.

Melville Reserves made a fine start as well, with a 4-1 win over Oratia.
