Bold Victory in Melville Golf Classic
An NZI team led by club committee member Jeremy Bold has won the 2019 Melville Golf Classic.
The tournament was contested under an ambrose format at Ngahinepouri Golf club, with NZI returning a nett score of 53.75, barely pipping second placed SD European (54) and third placed Provident Insurance (58).
The tournament raised about $6000 towards Melville’s 2019 season expenses.
Bold’s team consisted of himself, playing off a 19 handicap, 15-year-old Melville academy player Tyler Bold (27 handicap), Adrian Yamananathan (12 handicap) and Mark Tysoe (15 handicap).
In collecting the Brian Coe Memorial Trophy, Jeremy Bold said his team was humble in victory, but delighted to have finished top.
“We were not intimidated by the big stage,” he said.
“NZI have been helping Kiwi’s for over 159 years, so we know what it takes to plan and prepare for the unexpected.
“As insurance we drafted Mark (Tysoe) into the team from our Auckland office. You can never have too much insurance.”
NZI notched eight birdies and an eagle over the 18 holes, twice chipping in.
At the other end of the performance spectrum, Kris Allen (Advance Joinery) won the Greenkeeper’s Award for the most divots, while Sok Ven from the Stephen Hawking’s Football Boots team won a torch for recording the most hooks and slices.
