National honour for Melville goalkeeper
Melville first team keeper Max Tommy has been appointed goalkeeping coach of the New Zealand Women’s U17 team preparing for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Uruguay in November.
Tommy said being able to wear the silver fern as a football coach was “a dream come true”, while Melville co-coach Sam Wilkinson said the national gig should have a positive impact on Tommy’s role between the sticks in the northern league.
Wilkinson said it was an honour to have a Melville club member appointed to such an important role and praised Tommy as “an innovative coach”.
“Like Luke Searle, the work Max has been doing with coach education affects how he starts looking at the game,” Wilkinson said. “They start seeing things a bit differently, which can often make them better players.”
However there is a possibility Tommy’s commitments mean he will miss one match for Melville.
Wilkinson praised Tommy for having a tremendous work ethic.
“He is very hard working. The number of sessions he does in a week is very high. Just about any time I am down at Gower, Max is there, doing one-to-ones of working in small group sessions.
“He is a very innovative coach who is not set in his ways, and as a student he can often be more flexible with his time which probably helped bump him to the front of the queue ahead of coaches with full-time jobs.”
