Melville’s Cup dream is over

Melville will concentrate on northern league promotion for the rest of the season after bowing out of the Chatham Cup in the fourth round at the hands of runaway premier league leaders Onehunga Sports.

Onehunga won 1-0 at Waikaraka Park, with the goal coming in scrappy fashion in the 60th minute from Andrew Milne.

Contrary to pre-match suggestions, Melville did not play with any freedom, but stuck to a pretty rigid game plan of sitting back and trying to strangle Onehunga.

Melville’s best chances fell to Stafford Dowling, who had one scything shot narrowly miss in the first half, then with time almost up he was delightfully played in by a header from Marc Evans. But from close range he could not beat the keeper.

Evans also went close with a low free kick.

But at the other end Max Tommy had to make a couple of super saves to prevent Onehunga from going two goals up.

For Melville, Jacob Robb made his first first team appearance of the season, while fellow subs Joel McMullan and Thomas Mouncher made their first team debuts.

Melville are at home to Oratia at 2.45pm on Saturday.
