Melville youth gain WaiBop selection

Eight Melville United players have been selected in WaiBop’s national age group squads to travel to Wellington next month.

Grace Wisnewski (in photo above) has been named in the U14 girls team, while Alen James, Daniel Marsden, Gabriel Jhang, Isaac Campbell, Ivan Alonso, and Jermaine Andeweg are in the U14 boys and Tom O’Leary made the U15 boys.

All players turned out for Melville Red U15s this winter, and coach Johan Andeweg was delighted with their mass call-up to play in Wellington from December 14-18 against the best youth players from other parts of the country.

“The standard is pretty good, so we are absolutely thrilled to have so many players make the final selection,” Andeweg said. “There were also a couple more lads who were unlucky not to make it.

“We have some very good young Melville players there, some could go on to be key players in the future.”

The WaiBop teams will play Northern, Auckland, Central, Capital, Mainland and Football South teams over five days, seeking to win age group trophies and make an impression on the various New Zealand Football staff in attendance.

Melville United wish them all the best.
