Melville face national league high-flyers
Melville will face well-performed national league team Eastern Suburbs in their second pre-season match for 2019, at Gower Park, 11am on Sunday February 24.
The match was originally due to be played in Auckland, but has been shifted to Gower Park.
In their opening match on Sunday Melville drew 0-0 with defending premier league champions Onehunga Sports, who brought a strong team south. Onehunga Reseerves beat Melville 3-1.
Suburbs are second in the national league with three games to play, but have no scheduled league match this weekend. Suburbs feature former Melville players Adam Thomas, Mohammed Awad and Harry Edge.
Suburbs will be a big test for Melville, who were sometimes stretched by Onehunga, but also had good chances to score themselves.
Melville were without captain Arron Scott and Federico Marquez against Onehunga. Of last year’s squad, Stafford Dowling is off to Auckland, while Jordan Lamb is sitting the season out ahead of taking up a US university scholarship.
Only club newcomer against Onehunga was Argentinian Lionel Eito, who started on the right flank.
Melville have planned a club working bee for Saturday March 2, from 9am. All club members are encouraged to chip in. The biggest job will be replacing timber decking. Portable goals and dugouts also need repair. And there’s the usual cleaning and clearing out.
The 2019 Melville Golf Classic is set for Sunday March 24, 11.30am at the Ngahinapouri course. It costs $50 a player or $180 per team of four – or sponsor a hole for $500.
Player registration for the 2019 season is now open. All players must re-register. Please see a link on another article on this homepage.
