It was a competitive and sometimes combative game, with Melville leading three times only to be pegged back on each occasion.

Western Springs finished second in the premier league last season and are always tough on their home turf.

For Melville, the outing featured both new signings Cole Peverley, a 2008 All White, and Kieran Richards, signed from Wellington Phoenix Reserve. Peverley played in midfield, and Richards came on up front in the second half.

Goals came from Josh Davies, Marc Evans (penalty) and Richards. Evans also had what seemed a further worthy goal disallowed.

The Melville starting lineup was: Max Tommy, Flynn O’Brien, Aaron Scott, Luke Searle, Logan Wiznewski, Liam Steffert, Cole Peverley, Harry Christensen-Rose, Josh Davies, Mark Jones, Marc Evans. Subs were Richards, Liam Hayes, Ernest Pidoke, Jamie Searle, Levi Clark, Joel McMullan.

On Tuesday night a wider Melville squad XI drew 2-2 with Claudelands Rovers.

In earlier matches Melville drew 0-0 with Onehunga Sports, lost 6-1 to Eastern Suburbs, lost 2-1 away to Central United, beat Birkenhead 3-0 away and beat West Hamilton 3-0.

Melville face Wanderers Sports Club in their opening premier league match at 3pm at Gower Park on Saturday.

# Melville Reserves won 8-0.

# Jama Boss has left Melville and signed for Manukau United.
